FREE RIDE
For this series, I gave retired surfboards a second life as works of art. Each piece is inspired by the free spirit embodied in California surf culture that began in the early 1950s. These surfers didn’t attempt to tame the ocean; instead they challenged themselves to push the boundaries of what’s possible—riding unpredictable and sometimes dangerous waves.
This series aims to capture the experience of freedom - a sense of expansiveness and unconstrained possibility. Each board carries its own story. This series reminds me of an expression I heard about surfing: “Surfing is not something you do, it’s something you become.” I feel the same way about art.
